Top 10 Most Beautiful Video Game Soundtracks
I used to play games on my PC a lot. As children, me and my friends often went to play some games on PlayStation together. Nowadays, I don't play that much, but I wanted to share some unique soundtracks that stayed present in my mind even after all those years. Maybe you will also find them nice to listen to!
10. Destroy the Foreign Pirate - Tenchu
Tenchu is a game that has a warm place in my heart. I didn't play it on PlayStation 1 but much later on a PlayStation emulator. It has this old feel of a game where graphics is not everything. That's why I found the music quite unique. It has the traditional Japanese melodies and fits well the ninja atmosphere.
9. Tristram - Diablo 1
This song is ambient, not very noticeable, but almost everyone remembers it from Diablo 1. It gave the game the right dark atmosphere when wandering through the village of Tristam before entering the deep dungeon full of demonic enemies. Maybe the feeling of being safe after returning from the fights made it so memorable.
8. Gothic 3
Gothic RPG fantasy series are really memorable games. The main theme of the third game, composed by Kai Rosenkranz, really stayed in my memory as a very nice music that combined magnificent themes with peaceful calming passages.
7. Mass Effect 3
The song called Leaving Earth, composed by Clint Mansell, was a track of the third Mass Effect OST that I had to play many times after hearing it in the game. A short, not very distinct song but kind of gave me the right peaceful mood.
6. Ookami
Not very known game in the West, but a nice one inspired by Japanese Shinto myths. This song contains many nice themes inspired by traditional Japanese music. It's a nice peaceful music that being played in the background can just make anything one does more pleasant.
5. GTA San Andreas
Grand Theft Auto series features a lot of popular songs on their car radios. When the players enter a car, they can switch the stations and listen to different styles. Anyone who played GTA surely remembers some songs form the cars or motorbikes. To me, GTA SA was the most original game form the series and I will never forget the songs from the K-Rose radio which played every time I stole a car in the countryside. My top one song is Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man by Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn.
4. Age of Empires
The main theme of AoE is also something that is hard to forget for every lover of strategy games. It has to power to motivate us to basically conquer the whole world!
3. Heroes of Might and Magic III
The main menu theme is a nice fairy-tale-like song that clearly describes the game itself. Dragons, demons, brave knights, mages, orcs, just welcome in the fantasy world. This game also had other nice thematic songs which always perfectly matched the environment.
2. Metal Gear Solid
MGS games are really something unique. So many interesting game mechanics. And not just that, the main theme gave the old games another boost. It is unfortunate that the MGS composer Tappi Iwase was allegedly too much inspired by a Russian composer Georgy Sviridov and the theme had to be removed in later games due to copyright reasons.
1. Baba Yetu - Civilization IV
Christopher Tin who also created another theme Sogno di Volare for Civilization VI composed this masterpiece. It can be felt that Christopher Tin was actually a big fan of the series even before he composed this song. This piece played during the intro animation about the rise of human civilization and is for me the most memorable and beautiful song I have ever heard in games. The lyrics are words of the Christian Lord's Prayer in Swahili.
Let me know in the comments if you have your own favorite gaming song. I wanted to include some really interesting ones, but I know that there are also many other amazing OSTs like from NieR:Automata, Skyrim, Halo, or Portal. I don't play many modern games so I have surely missed many nice soundtracks.
